Professor Emeritus Norman M. Martin (philosophy and computer science) has received a singular recognition: the French government has awarded him the title and decoration of Chevalier de l’Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur (Knight of the National order of the legion of honor) for his service during World War II.
The decoration, which is the highest in France awarded either to French citizens or foreign national, shares the same characteristics with two U.S. decorations: the Medal of Honor (highest decoration for military actions) and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (highest decoration for civilian contributions).
The ceremony for the presentation of the award took place on Nov. 14 in San Antonio, Texas, at Fort Sam Houston, in connection with Fort Sam Houston’s “Salute to Veterans” celebration.
